Building a kick butt WordPress MultiSite from the ground up

Here we are going to build a kick butt multifunctional multipurpose WordPress MultiSite from the ground up that utilizes Domain Mapping for TLD’s, optional SSL (Using Let’s Encrypt within all shared hosting packages cPanel for mapped domains to include basic settings and features.)

Note: at the time of this tutorial the current version of WordPress which we will be using is version 4.5.1

Starting with a brand new fresh download of WordPress from WordPress.org we get it ready for upload and pre-configure the htaccess, wp-config.php and robots.txt files as follows:

In the wp-config.php file one wants to add the following define statements above the “/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */”

define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘1024M’);
define( ‘WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘1024M’ );
define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true);

Continuing the install now that the files that we had not uploaded before are now configured and ready to upload i.e. wp-config.php and the wp-config-sample.php files:

Now comes the magic of MultiSite management as we use Networks for WordPress in which we had written about a couple years ago and Network for WordPress is indeed a free plugin in the WordPress repository. There are indeed others of this type also free in the WordPress repository WP Multi Network and Multi Networks Setup which also appear to be aged as well – but we have been using Networks for WordPress since 2012 without issue and if it is not broken we will certainly not try to fix it.

NOTE: I am using add on domains to map the domains to the WordPress installations. Alias’s do not work for the purpose of SSL Certificate usage and Let’s Encrypt.

Adding a third domain plus implementing SSL using Let’s Encrypt and “add on domain”s within cPanel NOTE: Alias’s do not work for the purpose of SSL Certificate usage and Let’s Encrypt.:
